Holding Bowls for Sorrow

This week feels like a strange place in which so many goodhearted women I know are suffering.
I know it's normal, but it feels out of balance.
Beyond lighting candles
and sending light
I made little bowls for tears

a meditation of sorts for this aspect of our lives:
tearful times come to all of us.

Heavy days are part of the experience of life.
Can we breathe not just through them but into them?
Can we observe the discomfort and know we're held and loved through it?

Little bowls for tears when the boat starts taking on water.

Little reminders of our strength and the grace that silently accompanies us everywhere.
Little bell-like bowls.

In the Metal Shop today.

.

I know it's been a while since I've written about the little cat tribe,
but I wanted to fill you in on the adventure.

Leela was making such a fuss when she saw Joe on the other side of the glass door that I believed the transition to three sharing space would be a bit...brutal

but after the initial yowling our exotic little rescue did it was a balanced and joyful trio that formed.
Leela has someone with whom to tumbleweed about the house and lick raw

Janey has someone she really likes to touch noses with who distracts Leela from stalking her
and Lil' Joe has a warm safe place to thrive and grow and get many pets and kisses.

And this guy gets to watch all their hijinks and laugh:

it's like Joe was the missing piece for all of us...he balances the house.
He gladdens my heart in places it has ached for a long time.

Have a glorious weekend, my dear friends
and know I send you warm thoughts!

Sunny

In Love Again

A door held
That touch on the small of your back
A reassurance
A crooked smile

Some uninteded lingering kiss
Generous Listening
Fingers Entwined over coffee

Words carefully shared
Body warmly cradled
Fires stoked before the fuel burns out

A simple choice
Made quietly in solitude

In love again
Just like that.
.

Hammered flower petals, one missing because 'he loves me' was enough.
Repurposed vintage coral beads
Carved mother of pearl pikake flower
chrysoprase green dot
romantic drape
California bee wing
just as romantic as it gets, this gorgeous and gentle piece.

Theft and Manifesto

I saw a post the other day
on a maker's blog. They were in pain over work that had been copied from their own:
this is a theme in the world of internet creation,
one that has happened to most anyone with a good idea or a beautiful design.

Sometimes it occurs ten times over, sometimes the 'it'ness of the copied artist creates a picture quite like a line of parasitic ducklings following close on their trail, always striving to make what they've made, use language as they do, live life in a similar vein to theirs in the hopes of experientially touching what makes them lovely.

I would imagine the satisfaction never comes: how could it? We are so rarely satisfied by emulating as human beings. There is always something hollow in the 'lookalike' pieces, no matter how excellent the technique or craft.

It's the soul that's been snuffed out. It's a xerox no matter how fine.

In the best of circumstances the copier merely stops to dance at the edges of the originator's work on their way to the artistic language they will come to know as their own. They merely test and try. It's very normal for the first works. How many people who want to make a living doing art live in isolation from the hotbed of inspiration that the internet provides?

How many people learning the technical aspects of a medium have not tried to mimic the very pieces that made them love it in the first place?

This is learning, this is the mind of a beginner. This is not the mind of greatness. Too often it seems to be the norm.

I've heard tales, read stories about the small-time artists whose idea gets lifted by large corporations, a beautiful and original idea mass-produced, leaving the original maker sometimes without a legal leg to stand on and out of income that would have fed their children, housed themselves or their shops...
those are the ones that really chill my bones.
Those are the situations that make us all shudder, this I know.
This post is not at all addressing that level of fuckery.
I cannot even fathom the discomfort a maker has to work through to heal from that kind of violation. I hope I never have to.

What frames my post tonight is the idea theft that goes on between makers on a smaller scale, the business of being deeply inspired and then going on to make money off of that inspiration; selling it cheaper, making that xerox copy in whatever medium.
Making that knockoff.

I have friends who are deeply passionate about being protective of one's work and I see validity in their fierce approach. I love their colors, the way they seethe when these injustices happen because any way you cut it the practice sucks, but it's never ever going to stop.

Does that chill you to read like it chilled me to write it? There will never come a day when the makers who for whatever reason choose to copy stop doing so. And after that wave there will be another and another. A body could get mired in despair just thinking of the ocean of it all.

Yet
I feel joyful, hopeful and grounded about what I want to share with you.
This manifesto has been my way of life for the better part of the last two years and it is greater than the fear of being ripped off
but bear in mind I still observe that fear in me: I just choose not to invest my time in it.

It's a rabbit hole, that fear.

A few years ago one of my most prized and lucrative leather designs, the hand-drawn koi necklace that shipped off to nearly every single continent was copied completely and totally by an artist on Etsy and I found myself sitting with the discomfort completely empty of grace for the woman who intruded on my happy oblivion.

I hated.
I ached.
There was a blog shitstorm.
Of course there was: I was throwing my energy out hard and jagged.

And yet something wonderful happened because of the whole shebang: I mourned the loss of my design, the loss of my designer's innocence and then I just got back to work.

I went deeper. I dug into the loam just a few more inches and found inner resources to harvest.
I don't think she followed and it wouldn't even have mattered if she did, because the question had already formed itself
and I loved it (thanks, Rilke):

"What if every artistic hurt is a call to go deeper?"

Of course there's no guarantee that others won't come and pilfer the newer and earthier stuff you're pulling out of your guts, but that shouldn't be what it's about.

You've got bigger fish to fry, artist friend.

Here's what I came to live as my creative religion - I write it here in the hope that you can gather something of value for your own path. If it lights a teeny spark in your heart I'll be so excited for both of us!

.

.
.

.Creative Manifesto.

Stop keeping track.
Stop keeping tabs.
Stop feeling like there's a finite amount of everything for everyone, that someone else is going to steal your cheese if you turn your back.

Consider for a minute the glorious possibility that there is more than enough for you in every way you could be nourished, body and soul.
Open to the more expansive things in life and let them open you day after day until you're nothing but rot,
which you most certainly will be.

You are going to die.
Can you even begin to understand how finite that makes your life?
Without fail you are going to stop breathing, your heart will pump no more blood.
Your most valuable commodity is time and you're going to spend it building a moat around what equates to beautiful clouds? Your ideas?

Jesus, Girl Self!!

Do you really have time for anything less than a true and deep enjoyment of these flying years?

Dig deeper and keep going below the surface! Leave the pack mentality and make the most beautiful expression of yourself that God allows, that your fingers and muscles and bones support.
Spend your days in prayer and gratitude.
Do good.
Make Love.
Praise the One that made you.
Wonder at the world in all its complexity.
Make friends.
Make babies.
Listen.
Read.
Study the things that interest you.
Give your time to worthy causes.
Celebrate this one stunning moment that is constantly blossoming
like an infinitely large crocus.
Get quiet and still as often as the day or night will allow.
Unplug.
Connect.
Lie in your hammock and feed peanuts to the jays.
Eat pie.

Seek the very bedrock of your existence and the very height of human potential.
Be a pioneer of this one small perfect awful and wonderful life you've been given.
Let life empty you and make you a vessel for the greatest expression
that your unique footprint can muster.
Anything else shortchanges everyone.

Now get the fuck to work.

Amen.

Goodness

Postscript: MIND BLOWN. Thank you, dearest dearests.
xoxoxox

Days like the few that just flew by are such a lovely reminder of how blessed we are
that kindred spirits come into our home
laugh with us
dine with us
share stories and celebrate our child...

I keep getting knocked on my can by waves of gratitude.
Thank you, Everything.

Today I am opening up Twelve Custom Spots in the Metal Shop

for pieces that will be shipped to their intended beloveds by the holidays.

This year's custom work could not be described any other way than transformative.
I am still working through a few amazing designs for the Leather Shop's last wave of custom orders, and as my hands are a little carpal-sensitive it's slow going.

That's ok. My people have patience and good souls.

Goodness abounds.

The best of nights to you, dear friends!

Turquoise Magic Spells and Continuation of the Failure Series

Friends, I am running on coffee.
Happily.
Carefully.

Sleep has been fitful as the Muse is visiting and HOW.
I eat color, forgetting to feed my mouth.
This week it is turquoise that nourishes the most
and as the earrings came out of their polishing places
they got decked out in blue.

Kingman, all.

and juicy sweet Chrysoprase on this lovely flower.
Green and blue all over.

The unrest of assimilating a new soul into our house also plays into the tired
of my limbs.
Slow, slow slow it goes: Lil' Joe lives in the Mudroom for now, content to watch the girls through the glass doors, content with trips out to smell the house with doors safely shut.
He's so easygoing, Janey seems to be as well but Leela?
She is a fucking TIGER.
I love it: I love the cat she's becoming.
And yet I hope she will ease up enough to let this little tigger be a happy member of the brood.

The studio has been extra respite-y this week, smelling so good and
yielding such beautiful fruits.

I played with balance even more than before as the Failure Series continues: so much fun, so many smiles and sighs as these earrings came to be.

they're all in the

as I type

and as I type the babe sleeps
and Jane has wedged herself on my lap,
her head on my right arm, bobbing with each word that comes loose from my fingers.

Time has been a dangerous driver this week, come and gone at alarming rates
of whoosh and zoom...what?
Where did it go?
Where's the fire?!!

Things still burned themselves into my heart and mind, though.
That's good.
It was not like driving for miles and realizing that you cannot recall a single road sign or
landmark....
there was attention paid
.

There were stories written.

And how are you, friends?
How have you fared this week?

What magic did you unearth?

I hope you find time today to do something lovely for yourself
or rest

if that exists somewhere....
;)

Dedication

To the little girl who was going door-to-door trying to find a home for this kitten
next to the 280 entrance in downtown San Jose...

Honey, your kitten found a home.

After you left him on the sidewalk
he spent the night outside, his last unsheltered night on earth.
I'd like to think he found a warm place, but I cannot say for sure where he slept
or what if anything he ate when he woke.

My story with him begins at 10:00 AM Sunday morning
watching him stand attentively next to two lanes of fast-moving cars
with little fear, wedged between the freeway entrance
and drivers paying no attention:
no one stopped, no one even slowed down or changed lanes.

There was not a second's hesitation in my heart: he was going to die.
I pulled up a few dozen feet away so as not to scare him because I thought surely he would bolt in the opposite direction
but when I crouched down and rubbed my fingers together he ran straight into my arms
and I held on to him for dear life
until he was shut safely in my car.

Little girl, my heart was racing. We have a full house: a baby, two cats and two adults
but my next sensible and reasonable thought was erased by a deep and perfect purr
and one paw on my cheek.

Whatever you did to help him be so sweet, thank you.
This kitten is the one-in-a-million kind of tender and strong. He's smart and bold and friendly.
I can tell by how fearless he is with people that you took good care of his heart.
He slept in my lap while I drove to Freedom, California for a meeting: once we started moving he just settled in.

Ditto for the ride home. Did he tuck his paw over your wrist when he slept in your arms?

Sweet one, I don't know anything more than that he's a boy and he's ours. I need to get him tested for things that would either have him be our backyard cat or join Janey and Leela indoors.

Heaven knows you will likely never read this blog or know that there was an answer to your heart's wish that someone take care of what your parents couldn't
but if there was some sort of flare I could send up
or a message written in smoke above the valley here I would write it,
I would light it.

It would say
"He's Home. His name is Lil' Joe and we love him already. Thank you for bringing him into our lives".

xoxo,
Sunny

Failure Series

By all definitions natural, the elements I've used in this series did not come to fruition.
The seeds did not yield a tree, the saplings did not grow to maturity.

Cracked Open and Shining Jacaranda Seed Earrings with Repurposed Vintage Coral

The flowers withered before they had a chance to show their full beauty, crisped by the unusual May triple digit temperatures.

I found them all on the wind, in the wood-chipped business flower planter that would never suffer a jacaranda tree
in the underbrush of forests
in the backyard college campus I haunt with the babe

These failures.
These dead things thin and frail
somewhere between bone and dust
.

Samara with Star and Chrysoprase Necklace

See how they shine!
A new purpose for each
hundreds of years of beauty started today
lasting beyond the season into jewelry boxes of grandchildren
and treasured moments

This is failure, friends.

Isn't it beautiful?

Jacaranda Laurel Necklace in Brass and Sterling Silver

In it is there not a seed of something brand new and fresh?
More than just a lesson in humility and loss?

Here is my wish for you:
that this series serve quite seriously the purpose of reminding you
that nothing is ever guaranteed its end
and the most seriously discarded dream

Seed Pod Post Magic Spell Earrings

ripped to shreds even,
crushed to bits

can know resurrection just as surely as these
beautiful ghosts.

In the Metal Shop

later tonight.

Sunny
